Immediate Denture Post Operative Instructions
Immediate Denture Post Operative Instructions
*Immediate dentures are fitted immediately after teeth are extracted just as the name implies. The benefit of this
is that you are able to have replacement teeth immediately. The disadvantage is the fit of the denture is
compromised due to the amount of healing that takes place with the bone and gum tissue following the removal
of teeth. These dentures are designed as a short term replacement with a more definitive denture 3-6 months after the teeth are extracted. You will have discomfort for the first 1-2 weeks after the teeth are removed due to the extractions andsore spots caused by your new denture. In addition, eating and speaking will be difficult during this time period
First 24-48 hours (Days 1-2):
-Leave the denture in at all times to allow the healing tissues to mold to the internal aspect of
the denture. You will leave the denture in until you visit the office again for your initial
adjustment in 1-2 days.
-A soft diet is recommended due to the soreness from the extractions and new denture
-Avoid smoking, drinking through a straw, hot beverages, or alcohol since these all have an effect
on the healing process. You may also ice the area to help reduce swelling.
After your initial adjustment (Days 2-7):
-Leave denture in except 3-4 times a day to clean the denture. You can do this with a soft bristled
toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Do not leave the denture out as this will allow the
tissues to change and make re-insertion of the denture more difficult
-At your 7 day appointment, you will have a 2 nd follow up with the office for additional
adjustments
-Continue to avoid smoking during this time since this will have a negative effect on the healing
process and greatly increases the chance of painful infection.
After your one week follow-up:
-You will need additional adjustment as the bone and gums continue to heal over the next 3
months. These will be schedule on an as needed basis. Sometimes the healing changes are so
significant that a new denture is required to be fabricated after complete healing takes place in
3-6 months.
